We love stories for young and old! At Dokumentale 2025, it’s not just the grown-ups who get to enjoy a world of fascinating non–fiction stories—our youngest visitors are in for an adventure, too!
In close collaboration with educators, we’ve designed a special program tailored to the needs and interests of children and families. Set in the city’s oldest film studios, Dokumentale is a festival for everyone!
The Dokumentale Kids Program invites young explorers to dive into captivating stories, discover the world through the magic of non-fiction storytelling, and get hands-on in interactive workshops. Elephant is frustrated when things don’t go his way—but he soon learns there are smarter ways to deal with anger. A charming picture book about patience, empathy, and managing emotions.
Whether you're just starting to read, already a big reader, a book lover, or not so fond of reading:
The reading-theater workshop is a place for kids (ages 7 and up) who love stories, enjoy reading (or not), are curious or shy, loud or quiet. In this workshop, we’ll explore our voices and bodies, make up dialogues, create characters, and practice together. There will be laughter, shouting, and clapping! In just two hours, we’ll put together a fun little performance or short scenes from different types of stories, chosen to fit the age and energy of the group.
With the motto: "It’s all just theater!"
At the end of the workshop, we’ll invite parents to be the audience and cheer us on with a big round of applause!
Let’s get started! Enjoy the show!
One stormy autumn night, the little mouse Eisbjörn is rescued by Gustav, the old lighthouse keeper. He finds a home in the lighthouse, and the two become close friends. But when Gustav falls seriously ill and can’t light the beacon, a fully loaded ship heads straight for the coast—right into a raging storm. The sailors’ fate now rests in Eisbjörn’s tiny paws. A race against time begins for the brave little mouse.
Max Kaplan brings stories to life through his picture book cinema. As he reads, the richly detailed illustrations by his father, Lev Kaplan, are projected large and without text onto the wall — opening up space for discovery and imagination.
His events are more than simple readings: Max asks questions, encourages children to think further, and invites them to actively participate. In this way, they don’t just experience a story, but also engage with the book as a medium in all its dimensions. At the end, it gets creative — the children draw their own ideas for the story or imagine entirely new twists.
To 7-year-old Nori, it’s simple: she is a girl—because she has a girl’s heart. But her body says otherwise. What begins as small arguments over clothes becomes a deep journey of identity and love. When Nori finally shares her biggest dream—to become a “real” girl—her mother’s world shifts forever. The son she thought she had never truly existed. What remains is a daughter, full of courage and longing. This intimate documentary follows their emotional path as they challenge norms, face prejudice, and redefine what it means to be a girl.
