Kayayo, The Living Shopping Baskets

Mari Bakke Riise / Norway / 2016 / 33 min

In Ghana’s capital, thousands of girls work as human shopping carts—called “Kayayo”—carrying heavy loads. Bamunu is eight years old and was sent away by her family two years ago. Since then, she has worked on markets, lived in dangerous slums, and dreamed only of one thing: going back home. Without schooling, exploited and alone, she struggles every day to survive. When the long-awaited call from her family finally comes, it marks the start of a journey full of hope, pain, and the longing for a lost childhood.
