The Age of Water by Alfredo and Isabel Alcántara, awarded Best Documentary at Doxumentale 2025, tells a story of grief turned into strength. After the death of three girls, six mothers in Mexico fight against the silence surrounding poisoned water. Alfredo and Isabel Alcántara’s film is a hymn to resilience and humanity. The jury—consisting of Ana Castañosa Bielsa, Alexandra Dorisca, Afsaneh Salari, and Lars Kraume—was deeply moved by the film’s overwhelming beauty and powerful message. Our jury decided to give two films a Special Mention:
The Dialogue Police — With words and patience, a Swedish police unit acts as a mediator between protesters and counter-protesters, striving to keep dialogue and free speech alive amidst escalating conflicts. Also honored with a Special Mention is Third Act. Tadashi Nakamura’s intimate portrait of his father, Robert A. Nakamura, tells a moving story of pain, memory, and the journey toward self-acceptance—a powerful film about identity and healing through cinema. The Doxumentale Audience Award goes to Changing Sides by Loraine Blumenthal. Thomas “Eichi” Eichstädt coaches a football team of young refugees while confronting his own past as a former right-wing extremist.
