Berlin has long been a city of refuge and opportunity, attracting filmmakers from diverse regions seeking creative freedom and a supportive community. This talk will explore the unique experiences of transnational filmmakers who have found a home in Berlin.

We will delve into personal storytelling, examining how filmmakers from different cultural backgrounds have used their experiences to create powerful and authentic narratives. We will also discuss the challenges and opportunities that arise from cross-cultural communication and collaboration.

Finally, we will explore Berlin's role in shaping transnational filmmaking practices. Is Berlin really a supportive and unique environment to experiment, grow and find your voice?

Debra Aroko

Debra is a Kenyan filmmaker and producer with a passion for storytelling that captures the nuanced realities of communities facing the impacts of the global climate crisis, the challenges they face, but also the resilience and hope they sustain.Debra works as a producer for the Solutions Storytelling Project, supported by the Skoll Foundation. Debra is a firm believer in the power of storytelling and its ability to bring hope and catalyze positive impact.

Thomas Kaske

Thomas Kaske was born in the G.D.R. After living in Nairobi, he studied Social and Cultural Anthropology and Film Studies. In 2013 he began to study Media Art and Media Design at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. During his M.F.A., he directed experimental short films. Since 2016 he has worked as a documentary producer under the umbrella of KaskeFilm. He is a General Assembly member of DOXBOX e.V and a member of D.A.E..

Irena Gruca-Rozbicka

Irena has worked in the audiovisual industry for over 23 years as a television expert and film journalist. In 2010 she co-founded the FilmPRO Foundation and was editor-in-chief of the FilmPRO magazine. She worked with international institutions and was a member of the board of the Polish SMPTE. She has also produced television programmes, written film reviews and scripted the children's film 'Invisibles'. She is the project manager of Crew United.

Marta Golba-Naumann

Producer, curator, owner of ENDORFINA studio company based in Warsaw and Berlin and co-director of HER Docs Foundation. In 2015 and 2017 she was awarded by Polish Audiovisual Producers Chamber of Commerce for the best producer’s debut for documentary ’15 Corners of the World’ by Zuzanna Solakiewicz and multi-awarded drama “All These Sleepless Nights” by Michał Marczak. Since 2021 she has been developing the industry section within HER DOCS Film Festival.
