Free Party: A Folk History

Oct 11, 2024, 6.00 PM @ Kater Blau

Event language: English

Join us for an evening exploring the club scenes of Berlin and England! Hosted at Kater Blau, a well-established nightlife venue in Berlin known for its energetic nights and pulsating parties, offering a distinctive atmosphere right by the water. We are excited to showcase a fantastic documentary in this electrifying environment where culture and nightlife converge. Kicking off the evening will be DJ Mirochka.

After her set, we are hosting a special screening of Aaron Trinder's film Free Party: A Folk History, taking us back to the beginnings of the Free Party movement in England during the 1980s and 1990s. Far off from commercialization and official venues, the movement threw wild outdoor parties. Its members demanded the right to celebrate wherever, whenever, and however they wanted—and became police targets. In an era before digital surveillance, they managed to put on Castlemorton, the largest illegal festival in England, inspiring people around the world to not only organize parties but also stage protests. Followed by a Q&A with director Aaron Trinder.

Aaron Trinder

Aaron says “This film is a unique look at a much underrepresented moment in cultural history, the last great unifying youth movement, before digital cameras and the internet, which really challenged the authorities, connected environmental awareness with music and questioned laws on land rights and trespass. Thematically its incredibly prescient to today, with new laws on trespass being proposed, illegal parties taking place post pandemic and 30 years since Castlemorton itself."
