The Friendship Bench
Reabetswe Moeti-Vogt / United States / 2024 / 76 min
In 2006, Dr Dixon Chibanda, a psychologist in Zimbabwe, is facing what seems to be an insurmountable challenge: many Zimbabweans have mental health issues, but there are very few psychologists in the country. He seeks a solution outside the conventional healthcare system and begins meeting with and training a group of fourteen grandmothers, who sit on public park benches with people from their community in need of support. Today, Chibanda’s approach is known worldwide.
